How does the certificate expiry reminder system work?
CertNudge runs automated reminder checks three times a day (around 04:00, 12:00, and 20:00 UK time (BST/GMT)) to help ensure you never miss a compliance deadline — even if there’s a short period of downtime.
When do reminder checks run?

Why multiple checks?
Running checks throughout the day improves resilience and helps ensure reminders are still delivered even if a single run is temporarily missed.
What happens if an email fails to send?
CertNudge keeps trying
- The reminder is securely queued
- It retries automatically on the next scheduled check
- Retries continue until delivery succeeds (within the retry window)
Why this matters
Short-lived email provider or system issues shouldn’t cause missed reminders — the queue helps ensure delivery once services recover.
How many times will CertNudge retry a reminder?
- Up to 5 retries per reminder
- Retries are spaced out over approximately 36 hours
- Once a reminder is delivered, it’s permanently marked as sent and will never be resent
If delivery never succeeds
After all retry attempts, the reminder is safely stopped and flagged internally for monitoring (to avoid repeated sends).
Will I ever receive duplicate reminders?
One reminder, one send
- Each reminder is sent once per certificate and reminder stage
- Successfully sent reminders are permanently recorded
- Retries are controlled to prevent duplicates
Designed to avoid spam
Even if your email provider has a temporary issue, CertNudge won’t “double-send” the same reminder.
What if my certificate is deleted or replaced?
No certificate, no reminders
- Any pending reminders for that certificate are automatically cancelled
- You won’t receive reminders for certificates that no longer exist
